SDCC 2016 Marvel Legends Series The Raft - Spider-man & Sandman

Both friend and foe. Here's a look at Spider-man and Sandman from the SDCC The Raft boxset.

First a word about how the figures were packed which I didn't touch on previously. They shouldn't do dynamic poses in the package. Most of the figures have a warped limb or two. It wasn't as apparent on Enchantress and Dreadknight. Spider-man, Purple Man and even Sandman got it bad. In my case at least.

Spider-man is largely the same figure as the "Pizza" Spider-man. He's got a new head sculpt, different colour tones for his costume and also some different costume design.

It is easier to show than to describe so there you go. The Raft Spider-man is on the right in the following pics. The most notable difference are the eyes which are bigger and more curved at the top. And the black outline is narrower. It's "McFarlanesque". The paint isn't good on my figure. The white is splotchy on close inspection. I'm bothered by the gap between the eyes. I feel they are a little too far apart. The lines on his mask are wider. There's one less line as compared with Pizza Spidey. The spider logo on the front is different as well. This one has a larger body and slightly thicker legs.

This head sculpt is bigger. His chin is sharper and the nose is less prominent.

The spider logo on the back of this figure has a rounder body and thinner legs.

The hands have a different type of peg which is surprising. You would have thought they would use the same ones. The alternate hands form Pizza Spidey cannot fit properly in this figure. It takes a bit of force to put them in and take them out. They may get damaged in the long run so I don't recommend doing it too often.

Now for a look at Sandman. He is portrayed as being in his sand form and hence mostly tan and brown in colour. It is widely speculated that the coloured version will be the BAF of a future Marvel Legends series. I think I'll prefer that over this. Sandman uses the same body as the Absorbing Man BAF. The design of his shirt was printed on the bare body which I don't like. Sure you can see some muscles through a shirt but this is overdoing it. The belt buckle was painted a brownish white. I'm usually happy to see paint detail but it this case I feel it should have been brown. He's got a great head sculpt. He looks pissed. The teeth were well done. The were painted in. What makes them outstanding is that they are of a different shade of white. Nice! His eyes have no pupils and have a brown thin brown outline around them. There's great detail in his hair. It's also got some dark brown shading in it.

Articulation. Sandman has a dumbbell joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, elbow hinge, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hinge hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look down decently but not up. The ankle hinge is restricted by his pants.

Spider-man has a ball hinge neck, butterfly joint, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. No the hips were not improved.

Comparison shots. I like both versions of the Pizza Spidey. But if I had to pick one I'll go for the lighter blue.

Toy Biz did a great job of their Sandman. I doubt Hasbro's would make me replace it.

I like the addition of another Spider-man. Sandman for me is meh. Thanks for viewing!
