Marvel Legends Vintage X-men Series Silver Samurai & Wolverine

Here's a look at the Marvel Legends Silver Samurai and Wolverine in his black costume.

I'm happy that Silver Samurai has been released. We need more villains and he is one of the more well known ones. Silver Samurai looks great. The figure is all new and has good size and bulk. There's a good amount of sculpted detail. Check out the armour and the wrinkles and creases on his attire. Very nice! The torso armour, bracers and greaves have more of a metallic shine whereas the silver on the shoulder armour and "skirt" piece is matte. The helmet is not removable unfortunately. I was hoping it would be, like on the old 5" Toy Biz figure. One issue on my figure is that the arms are not secure. They tend to come off whenever I try to pose them. At least it's able to hold its position once posed. Another thing is that the legs are quite rubbery but it's not as bad as with Storm.

Silver Samurai has a serious and stern expression like he usually does.

He comes with a katana and wakizashi. One sword is longer than the other. The wakizashi, or "companion sword" is the shorter of the two. Both swords are new accessories as far as I can tell. You'll want to be careful when making him grip them. The paint on the grip will get scraped off. It's already happened on mine.

The swords may be stored on the loops at his waist. One sword sits higher than the other. I'm not sure how Silver Samurai wears them. But based on actual samurais this is incorrect. I went to look it up. The swords typically cross each other with the shorter sword closer to the body and the katana on the outside.

Next up, Wolverine.

Wolverine is wearing the all black costume which he wore at the start of his own comic series in the late 80s for a couple of issues. The figure reuses the brown costume body with a new head and lower legs. It also reuses the belt. The head sculpt is okay. I quite like his angry, screaming expression. The eyes were painted looking up. They make him look a little silly. There's blue shading in his hair giving him that comic book look. Gloss black was used at his calf area and below to indicate boots. You can't really make it out in my pics. Sorry about that.

A close-up of the head. Did he wear a thin piece cloth for a mask or was it face paint? I'm not sure. Based on the paint on the figure it looks like a piece of cloth.

The Patch head may be used with this figure. Considering it's a similar body, we can also use several of the other Wolverine heads.

Accessories. He comes with an extra pair of gripping hands and the Muramasa Blade. The sword was what Wolverine was looking for in the story. This is yet another new sword which we're seeing for the first time. I like the black metallic look of the blade. There's also nice sculpted detail on the grip.

Articulation

Wolverine has a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, butterfly joints, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot.

Silver Samurai has a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel and up and down hinge wrists, ball joint upper torso, waist rotation, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, boot swivel and ankle hinge and pivot. He cannot look up due to the helmet. He can only look down just a bit. The shoulder armour prevents him from raising his arms fully. The upper torso joint has a good range of motion. The armoured skirt is flexible enough to allow for some decent poses.

Comparison shots.

Silver Samurai is a great figure. Wolverine is meh. He's heading straight to storage. Thanks for viewing!

  1. I never understood what the spiderweb-looking lines on Wolvie's face in 1987 were supposed to be (Shadows? Make-up? Some kind of veil?). I'd have preferred they stay forgotten.

  2. Actually it's more of a stocking iirc... as for the reason, I don't know, perhaps to conceal his identity or just his eyes? hehehe! :-)

Great review as always Jason. Looking forward for more. Iceman please.

  3. Crap over Logan's eyes was a stupid concept, how the editor didn't shoot that down is beyond me. That SS is a thing of beauty. They actually created a brand new & unique buck for this figure so it goes to show that just cuz it's a retro line of already done figures, they will throw in a new figure on a new buck every now & then.
