"When there's nothing to be gained, rising to the challenge at those times... is surely the mark... of a True Hero!"
With anime figures I look to the cheaper options nowadays. Namely those from McFarlane and Bandai's Anime Heroes line. The figures are decent. And sometimes look better with less articulation. I just hope that they produce more characters and not just the few.
All Might is a great looking figure. The proportions are good. I like his size and his bulk. Now this is more like it! He's big, muscular, strong and imposing. Very nice! The head sculpt is nice too. He's got his trademark reassuring smile. His sculpted eyebrows are very detailed. More so than his hair. His skin tone is a little light. I don't mind it too much. Majority of the design of his costume was sculpted on, which is great. The plastic has a bit of shine to it. It makes things clean and bright and very much like an anime character.

Comparison with the McFarlane version. That figure is too slim for my liking. The main issue though is the head which is too small. The Bandai figure is more proportionate and bulkier. It's only just slightly shorter than McFarlane's.
I did a head swap. Bandai's (B) head looks decent on the McFarlane (M) body. The peg hole is too big and needs to be secured. M's head is small on B's body.
All Might comes with an additional set of open hands, a "helping" right hand and a thumbs up left hand.
Now Midoriya.
Midoriya is a very determined character and it shows on his face. I like the look they gave him. There's a fierceness about him as well. His costume is quite plain. But even so most of the design elements were sculpted. You can also make out some seams and wrinkles in his costume. The mask around his neck is a separate piece. The front metallic piece has a greenish tint to it. I think in the anime it's supposed to be light grey in colour.
Comparison with the McFarlane version. The issue with that one is that he's too big. The size of Bandai's figure works better. I also prefer B's skin tone. M's is a little too pale.
Here they are with heads swap. M now looks better. As with All Might the head needs to be secured.
Midoriya comes with two additional sets of open hands. One set is more relaxed than the other. I would have liked if he came with an alternate neutral pleasant head and some effects pieces. M's effects may be used with him.
Articulation
All Might has a ball joint upper neck, a ball joint lower neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, revolver like joint wrists, ball waist, ball hips on an up and down hinge, double jointed knees and revolver like joint ankles. The shoulder joints have a bit of wiggle (up down front back) to them but does not add much to the range of motion. He cannot look up. He can look down just a bit. There's hardly any bend at the waist. The waist should be able to turn but on my figure it keeps going back to the center. I'm disappointed with the hip joints. He can hardly raise his legs straight up. In order to raise them they must swing out to the side first then they go up. This makes posing him properly tough.
Midoriya has a ball joint neck, ball hinge shoulders, butterfly joint, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, revolver like joint wrists, ball joint waist, ball hips on an up and down hinge, double jointed knees and revolver like joint ankles. He can look up and down decently. There's hardly any bend at the waist but at least it's able to turn. He has the same leg issue as All Might but he can raise his legs a little better. The knees are restricted due to the sculpt. Ankle pivoting is restricted due to his boots.
They both need a thigh swivel then they would rock!
Comparison shots.
Both All Might and Midoriya are nice figures. They make for great display pieces. They don't have the sort of articulation that I would like them to have (especially the legs) but it's decent for the price. Thanks for viewing!
IIRC, the All Might has pull-out joints at his hips and shoulders. It's the pull down hip joints on S.H. Figuarts and other action figures. Pull the hips out and that increases movement.
ReplyDelete@foldabotZ - yup I already pulled down the hips but it's not enough to have him do say a proper running pose properly.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know when they should release in the U.S.?

ReplyDeleteThese figures from Bandai will not be released in the US due to McFarlane having the license. The only place I have found them is eBay.
ReplyDeleteThese anime figures look so cool. Love My Hero Academia merch!
