"COLLIDE" Movie Review

A film starring Nicholas Hoult, Felicity Jones, Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins? The cast alone was enough to get me interested in the movie. Here's what I thought of it.

In COLLIDE Nicholas Hoult plays Casey Stein, an American who works for a drug ring in Germany. He quits the drug trade in order to be with his girlfriend, Juliet Marne (Felicity Jones) but soon finds himself having to return in order to get the money to pay for her medical treatment which she desperately needs. Casey's latest job though does not go to plan. Pursued across Germany, he races to save his own life and get to Juliet before the ruthless ringleader, Hagen Kahl (Anthony Hopkins) does.

I thought the movie was decent. It was fun and entertaining for the most part. The plot gets set up fairly quickly and from then on it was action the rest of the way. The highlight would have to be the exhilarating car chases through a German town and on the Autobahn (highway). A number of cars were showcased and it could give a certain Furious franchise a run for its money. The final third of the movie was a let down. Things were leading up pretty well and then it plays out too easily. It was rather disappointing.

Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley both gave stand-out performances. Hopkins's Hagen Kahl was cold and calculating. He had some great lines, and the way he delivered them you just cannot help but listen. He did not just stay idle. He also got to see some action. Ben Kingsley was a hoot as Geran, Casey's employer. His drug boss character was eccentric, flamboyant and crazy fun to watch whenever he appeared onscreen. You get the feeling Ben Kngsley enjoys this sort of roles. He seems to excel at it.

Nicholas Hoult was okay. He displayed sufficient emotion when required and handled the action bits well. Felicity Jones too was fine in her limited role. It is a shame she was not utilised more.

COLLIDE is now screening at local theatres. It may not be a top pick to watch for most but it makes for a decent alternative.
