A triple feature! Dr Strange, Astral Plane Dr Strange and Karl Mordo from the just released Marvel Legends Dormammu BAF series.
This is the Marvel Cinematic Universe Dr Strange. He is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and will first be seen in the upcoming Dr Strange movie which will be released in November. The figure looks pretty good. I think the head is a little too big though. The head sculpt is nice and has a decent likeness. His facial hair was sculpted on. His eyes were very well painted. There's a paint blemish at his left eyebrow but I'm going to take it as a small cut. He did look a little beat up in the trailer. I like his combed hair. I think they might have overdid the white on the sides of his head. It looks a bit much. He's dressed in robes. There's lots of great detail on it. There are layers, folds and wrinkles, and it's also textured. Very nice! The "skirt" is a separate piece and it too is textured. He wears several straps and belts and each have a different design on them. I like that the studs and the ring were painted gold. The pants and boots also have nice wrinkle detail. I think the colour of his pants is wrong. It's supposed to be dark blue but I don't mind it being black. He wears a gold medallion around his neck. I suspect it to be the Eye of Agamotto. The design on it is just some curved lines. The Eye is strung to a cord which is textured. He wears a unique red cape. It is pretty flexible. There are various sculpted patterns on it in sections. And some areas are textured. I like the shape of it. He wears it draped more on his left shoulder.
The cape and the Eye of Agamotto are removable. Without the cape the size of his head becomes more apparent. And also his longish neck and small body frame. That is the short width of his shoulders.
The Astral Plane Dr Strange is a waste of a character slot in the wave. Some may want it. But I think the majority of us would have preferred to have got another character. The Ancient One for instance. This figure is the exact same figure as the default version above. The figure was cast in a pinkish tinged pearlescent plastic. The hands are the open hands instead of the gripping hands of the default version. He comes with an all white version of the Eye of Agamotto. They should really have included his cape as well.
Up next is Karl Mordo. You may know him better as Baron Mordo. Actually I might be jumping the gun here. At this point we don't know what direction the movie will take. I'm just going to call him Karl in the mean time. Karl has a nice head sculpt. There's a good likeness. The eyes were well painted and there's good detail in his hair. He's dressed in robes. There's great sculpted detail on it and is textured in some areas. The large band across his mid-section has various straps of different designs on it. The diagonal strap tails off into threads which were sculpted on the green section below it. I initially thought they reused Dr Strange's pants and boots for him but it's not. The boots were painted with a gloss black to help them stand out.
Accessories
Dr Strange comes with an additional pair of open hands (magic kinda gesture) and a translucent magic effect piece. The effect piece is nice. It has the "flames" emanating from it and the pattern and the ancient text were all sculpted. There's a handle on the back for him to use it by, kinda like a shield which I think it might actually be. A magic shield of some sort. The BAF part is the left leg of Dormammu.
The Astral Plane Dr Strange only comes with the head of the BAF Dormammu.
Karl comes with a short staff. I don't think the staff is the correct weapon. I went and re-watched the trailer and what Karl carried on his back had a handle. It could be a sword or a long baton. Anyway, there's good detail on the staff and you can make out the wood-grain on it. He can grip it fine with his right hand but not with his left. The BAF parts are the right leg of Dormammu and two green blue flaming skulls.
Just to show you the handle on the back of the magic shield.
Articulation
Both Dr Strange and the Astral Plane version have a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees, calf swivel and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look up and down quite well. Raising his left arm will cause the cape to look off. Leg articulation is restricted by the "skirt" piece but there's still some nice poses he can do.
Karl has got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, swivel hinge right wrists, swivel and "sword" hinge (up and down) left wrist, ball joint torso, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He can look up and down well. Again leg articulation is restricted by the "skirt" piece but it's not as bad as on Dr Strange.
Comparison shots.
The figures are decent. I like the detail on their costumes. I can't wait to see the movie! Thanks for viewing!
Thank you for the review:-)
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if Hasbro included a cloth cape or something flexible but I guess cost would have increased too much.
Same feeling for Karl: can't see him as Mordo , but maybe I will love him once the movie comes out.
It's a cool figure, it reminds anything Star. Wars-related :)
Hello! Another great review! I already bought these figures and I am awaiting your arrival.
ReplyDeletePlease wanted to know if you will make the Review of Spider box Civil War ...
Wow! These are great.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the film to come out.
