From one dark lord to another. Here's a look at Lord Voldermort by McFarlane Toys.
I was not aware of this line until I saw the assortment online. The figures are in the 7" scale and are based on their appearance in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. They all look pretty cool. I decided to get one to check it out. Lord Voldemort seemed a good choice for the realistic snake he comes with and so here we are.
McFarlane Toys usually does good sculpts and they did not disappoint in that aspect. Lord Voldemort has a good likeness. I like the look of his sunken eyes and also the "nose" section. His pasty face looks a little too clean for my liking. I think a bit of wash would help. The painted on veins look okay from a distance. View them more closely and they come across like someone drew lines on his head. They did the robes really well. I especially like how it comes together in the front. They managed to style it just like in the film. Nice! The robes will need some straightening out as it was tied down in the package. His feet are not flat and he has some difficulty in standing.
A unique thing about the robes is that there's elastic straps sewn in the sleeves. The sleeves are big and this keeps the sleeves in place at the forearms at the front side. You know how when you're wearing robes and when you raise your arms and there's a lot of material hanging. This helps to achieve that effect. Or at least this is what I think the straps are for. It's best illustrated in the pic right at the top.
Here's a close-up of his face. And here you can better see the style of his robes. Click images to enlarge.
The robes are removable. And underneath you'll find him wearing what looks to be a leotard. My first thought was did he do ballet? Lol. That would be fun to see, him schooling the protagonists in ballet. It's that or this could simply be his bathing suit. People did wear something like this back then. The body looks quite segmented but it's not an issue considering it'll all be covered by his robes. The revolver joints at his wrists and ankles makes him look a little awkward.
Accessories. He comes with the Elder Wand, Nagini in snake form, a base and a couple of transparent clips. I don't know what the clips are for. I'll update it once I find out. I would have liked if he came with some alternate heads.
The Elder Wand has nice detail and some shading on it. The wand has some flexibility but still, take care when putting it in his hand. You don't want to break it.
Nagini looks great! It's one of the most detailed and most fearsome looking toy snakes that I've come across. Check out the scales and the teeth. Very nice! It has swivel articulation at three spots which I've marked out below. She's poised to strike!
There's a peg hole at the bottom of Voldemort right foot. He stands securely on the base. The label I feel should display his name and not Harry Potter's.
Articulation. He's got a ball joint upper neck, ball joint lower neck, butterfly joints, ball hinge shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, revolver (figma) joint wirsts, ball joint upper torso, ball joint mid-torso, peg hinge hips with limited swivel, double jointed knees, revolver (figma) joint ankles and toe hinge. He can only look up and down just a little bit. The upper torso joint is quite useless. It turns but not much. If you need him to turn it's easier to use the mid-torso joint. He can only bend forward a bit. He can arch back more. The elbows and knees have good bend to them. You can swivel his leg at the hips. The leg may only be turned outwards. The range is limited but it's good enough to achieve some nice poses. It would have been nice if it could turn inwards as well so he can do even more poses.
Comparison shots. I don't have the S.H.Figuarts figures so I can't compare him with them for you.
Lord Voldemort is a nice figure. The articulation is good and he comes with a useful companion in Nagini. They'll both be great for photos. I would have preferred him to be in the 6" scale so he can better fit in with my other toy lines. I won't be picking up the other figures at this time. They're not as appealing to me. Maybe when they go on sale. Thanks for viewing!
